Which GPS would have the best maps for Australia?

Which GPS would have the best maps for Australia?More specifically, which GPS would have the best, up-to-date maps? I don't like GPS that require to pay frequently for maps after the purchase of the unit.
I have also heard of gpsaustralia.net which allows the download of free maps for some GPS (in particular, Garmin). Would those maps be better than the paid maps?

Cost is not an issue, just a normal GPS with speaking capabilities for on-the-road driving.

The reason we pay for maps is that the GPS maps are pretty much owned by one company, Sensis which runs Whereis which is owned by Telstra.

Personally I find TomTom to be the most accurate and best (have used Garmin and Navman and Muvi). Your best is to see which one is offering a free map update, when I purchased my TomTom in 2008 it had one and I've not needed to pay for an update for it since. TomTom also has free user updates, as in adjustments to maps.

I would recommend checking out newelectronx primo version. I have used other gps models but find this easier to use and with free maps. good luck and hope this helps

The so-called 'free map updates' offer always expire only days before new maps go on sale. Its a sham. Seen it with TomTom and Garmin multiple times.

Unconventional but plausible solution: Buy a Smartphone with GPS or Assisted GPS functionality and use Google Maps to perform your navigation functions. It has the advantage that you are less likely to lose location signal than a 'satellite only' GPS unit.

Personally I have a TomTom unit from 2009 and find it to be satisfactory.

Garmin is the way to go for many reasons. Firstly by what I know they have the better map for your area. If you buy a recent Garmin handheld or Vehicle navigator (Nuvi) you can also ad topographic maps for Australia. No other manufacturers vehicle GPS can do this for you.

If you go with a handheld like the Garmin Oregon 450 or GPSMap 62S you will be able to add street mapping, satellite imagery, topo maps, custom map and ocean charts onto the unit. Garmin has the largest amateur map making following so you can find lots of free mapping too for various units.

I suggest contacting GPS City for assistance narrowing down what unit is best for you.
