Can someone explain the blue line behind the car displayed on my Garmin Nuvi?

Can someone explain the blue line behind the car displayed on my Garmin Nuvi?I realize it shows where I have driven, and I know how to turn it off and on, but how come when I'm on a street I know I've been on before with the navigation on, it doesn't show up. Does the line disappear after a certain time has passed?
