Q&A: Where can I find an affordable Golf GPS unit?

Where can I find an affordable Golf GPS unit?I've been searching for an affordable Golf GPS unit or something similar that will give me a reliable and accurate reading on the course. Even though I'm a techy and I would love to get something like the Garmin Approach G5, my newborn won't have it! :o) Please suggest an affordable option and where to get it. Also, I own a Garmin Nuvi 200W. Has anyone come up with any OEM Golf GPS software that I can load on it? I'm surprised that I didn't find anything like that.

I have not heard of the ones you mentioned. This March will be my third year with my Skycaddie SG4. As far as accuracy, I have learned to trust it. At times, I have play with others who also have a Skycaddie and the yardage difference may be +/- 5 yards between units. I just go with the yardage on my system. I guess I can safely say I have calibrated my clubs to my Skycaddie.

As far as affordability, it depends on your wallet. But Skycaddie does have multiple units from $ 129.99 to $ 500.00 (ballpark). What I did not factor in was the annual usage fee. Since I travel, I have the multi-state membership for $ 50 (access to courses in all 50 states). I believe a single state is $ 30, and international is $ 70 (worldwide).

I believe it to be a good deal. Very seldom have I "NOT" found one of the areas top courses unmapped. New courses are added everyday.

I have not heard about Garmin's GPS.

Try checking out SonoCaddie

JT - If your phone is an iPhone, a BlackBerry (Storm, Bold, Curve, Pearl, or 8800) a Treo or a Windows Mobile based unit that has GPS, you have the hardware already. All you need is GolfTraxx (free if you map a course), otherwise just $ 29.

I have a Nuvi 350 and they are closed systems. No way to load up any outside SW. Goes for all their non PDA devices.

I use sonocaddie, old one without color screen, it does the job perfectly well...

If you have a mobile device that operates on Windows Mobile, you can try freecaddie.com, iGolf.com, or if you dont there is of course Ebay and craigslist
