I used to have a Garmin Nuvi, once I bought it, I didn't have to buy anything else. Just plug it in and go!

I have a Magellin and there were no extra costs. As long as it comes with the mount for it.Plug and go

Eventually the maps will be out of date; you may have to pay to download an updated map. Also, there are optional pay services available like live traffic updates. The basic navigation functions, however, don't have any additional costs.
